Whenever you add a domain name as hosted in some account, you normally set a pair of Name Servers to direct it to that particular service provider. On their end, three records are set up automatically when the domain name is added - one A record and two MX records. The first one is a numeric address, or IP address, which “tells” the Internet domain where its website is, while the other two are alphanumeric and they indicate the server that deals with the emails for that particular domain name. The website and the e-mail hosting are often regarded as one thing, when they're in reality two different services. Having different records for them will permit you to have them with different providers if you wish. As an illustration, some new company can have excellent uptime for your site, but you might not want to switch your emails from your current host and by using an A record to point the domain address to the former and MX records to have the emails with the second, you can get the best of both companies. These records are checked when you wish to open a website or send an email - in either case, the company whose name servers are used for the Internet domain is going to be contacted to retrieve the A and MX records and if you've set records different from their own, the correct web/mail server will then be contacted and you're going to see the needed site or your email is going to be delivered.

Custom MX and A Records in Web Hosting

If you have a web hosting account from our company and you would like to switch either your site or your e-mails to an alternative service provider, it'll take you literally just 2 mouse clicks to do so. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains will be listed alphabetically and you are going to be able to see and change the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you want to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the default 2, it will not take more than a couple of clicks either to add them. You may also set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a certain MX record will have. The propagation of every record that you change or create will not take more than several hours and if required, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which shows how long a record will remain active after it is modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

The Hepsia hosting Control Panel, which comes with our Linux semi-dedicated hosting, will enable you to view the A and MX records for each of the domain names or subdomains in your account and if necessary, to change any of them or create new ones. Controlling these records is incredibly easy as all domains/subdomains will be listed alphabetically, so editing a record is as simple as entering it in a box and saving the change. Setting up a new one takes just a couple of more clicks and if you experience any difficulties, you can check out our instructional videos on how to create A and MX records. Our system is intuitive enough to be used by individuals with little or no previous experience, yet sophisticated enough to offer you total control over all records and to allow you to have different A records even for domain.com and www.domain.com. If you are switching your e-mails to a different service provider and they ask you to create more than two different MX records, you can select the priority of each one.
